OpenVME - DB/Auditor

DB/Auditor is an IDMS Database Journal Analyser.

Testing of batch programs which process 'flat' files has traditionally included comparison of input and output files. TPMS/IDMS systems are often tested & checked by reference to dialogue scripts of inputs and expected outputs; comparison of database records before and after updating is either not attempted or is not done as thoroughly as the designer would like because of the volume of data involved. Sometimes the IDMS journal is printed and sometimes a program is specially written to compare the database before and after processing. Put simply, DB/Auditor is a general purpose 'record compare' with additional features which allow the user to restrict output to those records and fields of interest.

Providing a Central Journal is in use, IDMS records in the journal all changes made to the database in the form of before and after images of each record that has changed. A record is recorded as having changed even if the only changes made are to the record prefix i.e. the pointers (CALC chain pointers, set pointers etc.) associated with the record.
DB/Auditor analyses this central journal and produces a report showing details of all records which have changed.

The BEFORE and AFTER states, of each field within the record and of the record pointers are shown. Fields and pointers which have changed are marked. Inserted and deleted records are shown as having a blank BEFORE state or AFTER state respectively.

Details of each record type, e.g. field names and Pictures, are derived by an initial 'Generate' run of DB/Auditor against the target database Schema and Storage Schema source files, and stored in a separate DB/Auditor schema file for use at run time. DB/Auditor is straightforward to use and so encourages thorough testing.
